How to keep moles out of your garden?

How to keep moles out of your garden?

You know the drill: your grass is nicely trimmed, the garden looks spick and span, and a day later a molehill rises out of nowhere. The first one is soon followed by a second, third and fourth one. You may find a mole trap horrifying and your other household remedies have since been exhausted, but the mole diligently persists. Want to get rid of unsightly molehills in your lawn once and for all? Install an anti-mole net, also known as mole mesh. This enables you to keep all moles out of sight in an efficient and animal-friendly way.

Animal-friendly mole repellent

Keeping moles out of your garden in an effective and animal-friendly way is done by installing extruded mole mesh under your lawn. Duranet’s anti-mole nets are made of rotproof, UV-stabilised polypropylene and have a mesh size of 17 x 20 mm. You simply cut the anti-mole nets to size with scissors.

How does mole mesh work?

A mole needs only 5 centimetres of soil to dig a tunnel. By installing an anti-mole net 2 centimetres below the surface, you prevent moles from coming to the surface. Under the net, they can dig tunnels without being disturbed, but because the grass fuses with the mole mesh, they can no longer make molehills. In other words: they are there, but you cannot see them.

How to install anti-mole nets?

Anti-mole nets can be installed either under lawn turf or under a lawn to be seeded. So be sure to install anti-mole nets when (re)landscaping your garden. This way, you make your lawn molehill-free once and for all.

Installation of mole mesh in combination with turf

  1. compact and level the soil
  2. roll out the mole mesh and secure it by means of landscape staples
  3. the net edges are fastened every 2 to 3 metres by means of net staples in order to prevent gaps and bumps
  4. ensure an overlap of at least 30cm between the different nets
  5. lay the lawn turf and you’re done

Installation of mole mesh under a lawn to be seeded

  1. remove at least 10cm of top soil and level the ground
  2. roll out the mole mesh and secure it by means of landscape staples
  3. the net edges are fastened every 2 to 3 metres by means of net staples in order to prevent gaps and bumps
  4. ensure an overlap of at least 30cm between the different nets
  5. along the edges of the lawn, the nets are always folded up to the surface so that a closed space is created which moles cannot enter
  6. seed the lawn
  7. cover the seed with 2cm of soil and you’re done

When should mole mesh not be applied?

Is your garden flanked on multiple sides by stone edging or other underground obstacles? If so, it is not advisable to install anti-mole nets. After all, moles digging tunnels should be able to escape without hindrance. That is why mole nets should never be folded downward, otherwise the animal is trapped. In that case, what can you try to keep moles out? Plant caper spurge or imperial fritillary, spread calcium carbide, mole bait or mole repellent granules in the tunnels, create ultrasound or vibrations, set a mole trap or  fill in the molehills every day. Good luck!

Keep moles out.
