Do’s and don’ts: correct installation of rack nets

Rack nets are a must to ensure safety in your logistics workplace. Plastic screening nets offer a safe and flexible solution to prevent goods or pallets from falling down from racks. Of course, proper assembly is required. Duranet is happy to help you get started.

Why choose plastic screening nets?

To avoid fall hazards in warehouses, you can choose between metal mesh walls and plastic screening nets. Duranet recommends the latter. Why? You can find several good reasons in an earlier blog.

Plastic nets are very flexible in terms of dimensions. Thanks to their quick assembly with specially developed spacers, they are also very cost-effective. In addition, their durability is guaranteed since rusting is impossible. Finally, plastic screening nets are resistant to acids and alkali.

What do you need to install plastic netting?

Rack nets are nets which are mounted vertically against the backs of pallet or shelf racks. Their installation is very simple.  Here is what you need:

  • spacers
  • wire rope supports
  • bolts, nuts and spring washers
  • eye bolts and nuts
  • galvanised steel wire ropes
  • turnbuckles
  • cable clamps
  • carabiners

How to install rack nets?

Step 1

Mount the spacers at the top and bottom of the back of the rack frames. Maintain a maximum distance of 8 metres both horizontally and vertically.

Step 2

Mount an additional wire rope support at the top and bottom of each intermediate frame. Fasten the spacers and wire rope supports by means of two M10 x 30mm bolts, spring washers and nuts.

Step 3

Then form a framework with steel wire ropes from which you will later hang the nets. Attach the wire ropes with wire rope clamps to the eye bolts on the spacers. Then lightly tension the wire ropes with turnbuckles.

Step 4

Hang the nets from the wire ropes. Use a carabiner every 20 cm for this purpose.

Attaching rack nets by means of cable ties?

Sometimes we are asked whether rack nets can be attached directly to the racks with cable ties. That’s possible, but at Duranet we do not recommend it. Why?

  • Many cable ties age quickly due to exposure to UV light, compromising the net attachment.
  • Regular inspection and/or preventive replacement is necessary, which takes time and resources.

Therefore, Duranet recommends mounting with spacers, steel wire ropes and carabiners.
